Tom Contois represents insurance carriers in coverage and bad faith disputes. Over the past 16 years he has advised clients on resolving claims raising a variety of coverage issues – and, when necessary, has litigated and tried cases in federal and state courts throughout the country. He has also represented carriers in mediations and arbitration proceedings.

Tom’s practice focuses on first-party property coverage issues. He has assisted clients with losses resulting from hurricanes, earth movement, tsunamis, fire, corrosion, pollution and other causes. In addition to the coverage issues presented by such cases, Tom’s work with carriers has frequently included defending against claims of bad faith. He is a member of the Loss Executives Association, and has presented at the PLRB claims conference. He is also a member of the Insurance Law section of the North Carolina Bar Association.
Tom is also an active member of the firm’s Cybersecurity and Data Breach group, assisting clients with issues relating to insurance coverage for the costs that can result from a data breach. He is a member of the Data Management and Security
Committee of the Defense Research Institute.

Before joining Smith Moore Leatherwood, Tom was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of a large international firm. Prior to that, Tom was a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, in the Disability Rights Section, the office charged with enforcing Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
